Most homeowners don’t know the differences between the services
interior designers offer, or what would actually fit them best.

Some people simply need expert guidance and reassurance.
Others need a comprehensive design strategy.
And some truly want a done-for-you experience.

The problem?
There are many types of home design services to choose from and it can be confusing
to figure out what would actually work best for you.

That’s why we created this free quiz:

TYPES OF INTERIOR DESIGN SERVICES

  • Interior Design Consultation: Work directly with a designer in real time to get expert advice and make confident decisions

  • Full-Service Interior Design: Done-for-you, high-touch, luxury service where the designer manages everything from start to finish

  • E-Design (Virtual Design): Online design plans with mood boards and shopping links—you implement it yourself

  • Home Decorating: Focuses on finishing touches like pillows, art, and accessories

What is an Interior Design Consultation?

Consultation-based interior design is a collaborative approach where you work side-by-side with a designer to make decisions in real time. Instead of handing over your project, you get expert guidance to help you move forward with a plan and design direction.

This can include space planning, layout adjustments, paint colors, finishes, furniture direction, problem-solving, meeting with contractors, reviewing floor plans, discussing kitchen updates, and more — all tailored to your home and your goals. You stay in control, while the designer helps you avoid costly mistakes and second-guessing.

At Happy Place Interiors, consultation-based design is our signature approach —
and the only type of design service we offer.

It’s also important to understand that the word “Consultation” can mean very different things in the interior design world, which often causes confusion for homeowners.

Most full-service interior design firms offer a free or paid “consultation” at the beginning of a project. However, in most cases, that meeting is primarily a project discovery or project scope meeting. It’s often used to discuss budget, timeline, overall project goals, and determine whether the homeowner is a fit for the firm’s larger full-service process.

That is very different from the type of consultations we offer at Happy Place Interiors.

Our Interior Design Consultations are the actual service itself — real working sessions where you receive personalized ideas, professional recommendations, layout guidance, color direction, styling advice, and problem-solving in real time during the meeting.

You walk away with actionable direction, expert insight, and a clearer plan for your home.

We believe great design comes from combining professional expertise with your personal vision.

Typical investment:
$325–$2,000

Typically hourly or package-based (90-minute sessions, half-day, or full-day),
making it far more accessible and flexible than traditional full-service design.

Service Examples:

• A focused session to finalize paint colors, lighting, and layout
• A “Designer for a Day” where multiple rooms are planned and decisions are made on the spot
• Reviewing remodeling plans before construction begins
• Rearranging and refining a room using furnishings already in the home

What is "Full-service" interior design?

Full-service interior design is the most comprehensive and hands-off experience for the client.
In this model, a designer manages everything from start to finish: space planning, floor plans, layouts, materials, furniture, and final installation. It can also include working alongside contractors and architects on renovations, including moving walls, reworking layouts, and selecting all finishes and fixtures.

This type of service is ideal for homeowners who want a done-for-you experience and prefer not to source or shop for items, project manage the process or be in full control. The designer leads the entire process, presents curated options, and executes the vision. Because of the level of involvement and responsibility, it’s considered a premium, high-touch service.

One area that often causes confusion is the word “consultation.”

Most full-service firms begin with an initial consultation, but that meeting is often very different from a consultation-based design session. In the full-service world, the consultation is frequently an introductory meeting used to discuss project scope, investment level, timeline, and whether the project is a fit for the firm’s process and minimums.

At Happy Place Interiors, Consultations are not introductory meetings — they are the core service itself.

Our model is intentionally collaborative, advice-based, and focused on helping homeowners make confident decisions in real time rather than handing over the entire project.

Typical Full Service Interior Design Investment:
This ranges greatly depending on many factors. But often starts around $5,000 for a very small project and go up to $75,000 and beyond  in design fees, with total project costs significantly higher depending on scope.

Examples:

• A full home renovation with all finishes, furniture, and styling handled by the designer
• A turnkey living room transformation where everything is sourced, purchased, and installed

Happy Place Interiors does not offer full-service interior design services.

What is E-design (virtual interior design)?

E-design (or virtual interior design) is a remote service where a designer creates a plan for your space without being onsite. This typically includes a mood board, layout suggestions, and a curated list of furniture and decor with shopping links.

This option is flexible and budget-friendly, and it requires the homeowner to execute the design themselves. The homeowner will often have one or two options of items to choose from.

Typical investment:

Ranges from $200 to $2,500+ per room depending on detail and revisions.

Examples:

  • A digital design board with a complete room concept and links to purchase each item

  • A layout plan with instructions for furniture placement and sizing

What is home decorating?

Home decorating focuses on the "finishing touches" that make a space feel complete and inviting. This includes pillows, throws, artwork, rugs, plants, and decorative accessories that enhance the look of a room.

It does not involve changing layouts, improving function, or making structural decisions. Instead, decorating builds on what’s already there, adding personality and warmth through visual details.
Some home decorators will shop on your behalf, others don't.

Typical investment:

Ranges from a few hundred to several thousand dollars
depending on the scope and items purchased.

Examples:

  • Refreshing a room with new pillows, art, and accessories

  • Adding greenery, layered textures, and decor to complete a space

During a Consultation, Happy Place Interiors, can decorate your home with items you already have in the home.
We will tell you what to buy, but we do not shop for you.

Why more homeowners are choosing consultation-based interior design in 2026

Interior design is evolving—and so are homeowners.

Today’s clients are more informed, more hands-on, and more connected to their spaces than ever before. With endless inspiration online and access to products at their fingertips, many homeowners don’t want to hand over full control. They want guidance. They want clarity. And most importantly, they want to feel confident in their decisions.

That’s exactly why consultation-based design is growing so quickly.

Instead of waiting weeks (or months) for a full-service rollout, homeowners can make meaningful progress in a matter of hours. They get expert direction on layout, color, materials, and flow—while still maintaining control over their budget, timeline, and final choices. It’s a more flexible, efficient, and empowering way to design a home.

A smarter approach for how people live today

It allows you to:

  • Make decisions faster without second-guessing

  • Avoid costly mistakes before they happen

  • Work within your own timeline and budget

  • Stay involved in the process while still getting professional guidance

Rather than outsourcing everything, you’re collaborating with an expert—getting the benefit of years of experience, without the added layers of complexity.

Why this model works so well in today’s world

Search has changed. The way we make decisions has changed. And the way we design our homes has changed too.

People are no longer looking for one-size-fits-all solutions. They’re looking for personalized, thoughtful guidance that fits their life—not a rigid process that takes over it.

Consultation-based design meets that need perfectly. It’s adaptable, collaborative, and built around real life.

At Happy Place Interiors, we’ve seen firsthand how powerful this approach can be. Clients walk away with clarity, confidence, and a plan they can actually move forward with—often in a single session.

Is consultation-based interior design right for you?

If you’ve ever felt stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure where to start—this approach was made for you.

Consultation-based interior design is ideal for homeowners who want expert guidance, but still want to be part of the process. It gives you clarity, direction, and confidence—without handing over full control or committing to a large, long-term project.

This is likely a great fit if you:

  • Feel stuck and don’t know what to do next in your space

  • Have ideas, but aren’t sure if they’ll actually work together

  • Want to avoid expensive mistakes (wrong furniture, wrong paint color, wrong layout)

  • Are overwhelmed by too many options online

  • Want professional input before making big decisions

  • Like being involved and making your own purchases

  • Want to move forward now instead of waiting weeks or months

It may not be the best fit if you:

  • Prefer a completely hands-off, done-for-you experience

  • Don’t want to be involved in decision-making

  • Are looking for someone to fully manage contractors, ordering, and installation

(If that’s the case, full-service design may be a better fit for your needs.)

What you walk away with

One of the biggest benefits of consultation-based design is how quickly things click.

Instead of second-guessing every decision, you walk away with:

  • A clear plan for your space

  • Confidence in your choices

  • Specific recommendations tailored to your home

  • A sense of direction that makes everything feel easier

Many clients are surprised by how much progress can be made in a single session—and how empowering it feels to finally move forward.

A simpler, more empowering way to design your home

You don’t need months of planning or a massive budget to create a home you love.

Sometimes, all you need is a few hours with the right expert—someone who can help you see your space differently, make confident decisions, and move forward with clarity.

That’s exactly what we do at Happy Place Interiors.
